As some of you know, I work for TYF Adventure in St Davids as a Hire Coordinator. As you probably envisage this is mainly seasonal, though the season here in West Wales is spreading its wings and will probably this year start early March and run through until late October. Traditionally people like myself are employed or freelance during the season, but what about the winter months? Well, after a well earned rest for a week or so, probably set off for warmer climes for a short time and then back to get ready for the next season. This used to equate to a few months without earnings, which is why we let our Shepherds Hut and Summerhouse (Winter retreat!) out all year, tiding us over, thanks to our guests.
TYF Adventure have longed wrestled with this seasonal employment, given that staff and guides will often work a winter season if they are fortunate enough, skiing or in varied employment to make ends meet until the next season. As you can imagine, travel restrictions in recent years have added to this conundrum. To this point TYF looked to other winter seasonal sectors that could possibly allow TYF to employ some of the staff during these winter months. One sector that offered a solution is Forestry. Especially tree planting, the winter months is the time to transplant trees as they are dormant at this time. As we know, tree planting is fast becoming a solution to combatting our carbon emissions, lots of businesses buying trees to offset their carbon footprint, but who's going to plant these forests? Its not a simple task to restock a cleared forest area with mechanised solutions, its more suited to manual endeavours and the Forestry industry has often relied on teams of tree planters during the winter months to tackle this.
TYF teamed up with TilHill Forestry UK, the UK's leading forestry, timber harvesting and landscaping company. Tilhill offers a full range of forest and woodland management services to owners, including forestry and woodland investment expertise. So, TYF signed up and invested in tree planting and welfare equipment for their team. This would generate an income whilst also supporting some of TYF's wider environmental practices. In the shop TYF have products that openly support the purchasing of trees, now TYF are actively involved on the ground tree planting in West Wales.
So, I'm actually doing something else new, developing tree planting skills. Let me be clear, we have had a great introduction to this, working outdoors is a given, having beautiful clear skies and a chill in the air is a bonus, being involved in providing a positive investment for future generations is priceless. Its an activity that encompasses the element of adventure, it is hard graft, you rely on your own abilities and you are open to the environment, BUT it is very rewarding. I'm hoping that as we get up to speed it also becomes a positive income supporting the off season for seasonal workers at TYF.
I'm off for a long soak in the bath.......
